OSHA Bloodborne/Airborne Pathogen Training for Drug Testing

To maintain compliance with OSHA training requirements, re-enroll in training yearly.

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training for Collectors is a specialized self-paced course for collectors and alcohol testing technicians who are handling specimens for drug and alcohol testing. The course was adapted from our main bloodborne training courses and will take about 1-hour to complete and brings awareness to the risks of occupational exposure inherent to this line of work and is created to align with both initial and recurrent training, in conjunction with your healthcare facility's Exposure Control Plan (ECP).

Training provides learners with the knowledge to respond effectively to incidents like accidental spills of potentially infected specimens, and how to mitigate risks associated with bloodborne pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis, and be prepared for actions to take in case of exposure. Enhance your safety and others around you with our dedicated training.

U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards mandate that employers must conduct annual training for any employee subject to potential occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens through urine specimen collection. Specimen collectors who complete bloodborne pathogen training will develop an understanding of risks, preventative, and remedial measures for potential occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

When provided in conjunction with an appropriate Exposure Control Plan (ECP), this course complies with the training requirements of OSHA Standard 1910.1030(g)(2)(vii). The class is designed for all manner of medical staff that perform urine specimen collection in a healthcare facility, testing site, and/or other facility that conduct drug testing.

Students learn at their own pace with our online training program that uses videos, documents, and resources and have an opportunity for interactive questions and answers throughout the program. Also included are downloadable materials featuring relevant OSHA regulations. A certificate of completion can be printed immediately after passing the online exam.

Urine specimen collectors have an occupational risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. They require annual treatment and prevention training. Sign up and complete Bloodborne Pathogen Training for Collectors at your convenience!

This course covers necessary aspects of bloodborne pathogen control and prevention, including:

  • The risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens as a urine specimen collector;
  • What types of pathogens can be transmitted through blood;
  • How to prevent exposure;
  • What an Exposure Control Plan is and how to maintain it; and
  • What to do if you believe you may have been exposed to a bloodborne pathogen at work.

The concepts, principles, and procedures discussed in this course derive from OSHA regulation Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 1910.1030. This course is designed to accompany a custom Exposure Control Plan as mandated by OSHA Standard 1910.1030(c)(1)(i) for any “reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of an employee’s duties.” (see “Occupational Exposure” OSHA Standard 1910.1030(b)).

  • Understand the OSHA regulations related to bloodborne pathogens in the context of drug and alcohol testing, enhancing regulatory compliance.

  • Identify the occupational exposure risks specific to urine specimen collection and handling, and recognize the steps to mitigate these risks.

  • Acquire in-depth knowledge about various bloodborne pathogens, their modes of transmission, and the potential health implications of exposure.

  • Learn and apply effective preventative measures to minimize exposure risks to bloodborne pathogens in the workplace.

  • Understand and maintain an Exposure Control Plan in compliance with OSHA guidelines applicable to a drug and alcohol testing environment.

  • Develop competency in responding to exposure incidents, including immediate actions, reporting procedures, and follow-up processes.

  • Successful students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of risks and preventative and remedial measures for potential occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens with a 70% proficiency.

  • Familiarize with key industry terminologies and protocols related to bloodborne pathogen safety in the context of drug and alcohol testing.

  • Successful students can express an understanding of industry terms and the protocols involved by completing an online quiz with 75% or greater proficiency.

  • Apply learned knowledge in practical scenarios, fostering a safer and healthier workplace environment.
