In the world of drug screening, one of the most in-demand professionals is the Urine Specimen Collector. Qualification as a sample collector allows you to work in a hospital, medical center, laboratory, drug testing center, or even as a private business owner. Of course, the first step toward embarking on that career is to earn your urine specimen collection certificate. Getting this training is not as complicated as you might think.

Complete a Training Course

The first step toward earning your urine collection drug screen certification is to complete a qualifying course. Understand that there is no accreditation agency responsible for vetting education providers here, so you will have to choose a provider based on their reputation, course offerings, and adherence to both industry best practices and government regulation adherence. The DOT does not monitor or regulate testing agencies. There is also no set duration or time limit for the course, so long as all the required material is covered. Generally, courses take up to two hours to complete and should be followed by a brief exam to ensure that you retained the information learned.

Complete Five Mock Collections

One firm requirement to earn your Urine Specimen Collector Certificate is that you complete five mock collections under the guidance of a “qualified observer”. A qualified observer can be another urine collection professional with instructor certification or two years of experience.

The mock collections should simulate a variety of different collection scenarios, from standard collections with no problems to those where the sample donor attempts to alter the results in some way. This demonstrates your knowledge and ability to handle difficult collections to qualify you as a professional.

Refresher Training

Like most other professional certifications, your certificate must be renewed periodically. You’ll need to retake your course every five years. This includes the five mock collections observed by a qualified professional. This rule applies to all urine specimen collectors.
